Families: we all have one, whether we like it or not. I’m not saying you don’t love your little ones, of course. I’m just saying you also love a tidy house, a bit of peace and quiet, and the luxury of buying things which last a week before mysteriously breaking. Trying to keep a family home looking nice can be an exhausting uphill battle, but… well, actually, that’s pretty much it. Trying to keep a family home looking nice is an exhausting uphill battle.
Still, not to fear. There’s always a way to turn things around and make your home into a place the kids actually want to help you look after. Yes, that’s right. You can train your children to look after both their possessions and yours. First of all, you need to turn the house into something so impressive that everybody in your family (parents included) will want to look after it. I’m going to talk through some of the ways in which you can turn your gritty brittle house into a pretty little house.
Improve storage.
Let’s start off with storage space. Remember when you actually had room to breathe in your own house? Those were glorious days. Now, your little ones seem to be on a mission to clutter up the place to the extent that you have to tip-toe between sharp toys left scattered across the floor if you simply want to travel from the living room to the kitchen. We’ve all let out a non-child-friendly exclamation after stepping on a discarded piece of Lego. That alone should be enough reason to say “enough is enough” and decide it’s time to tidy up your house.
Whilst it may not be the most glamorous of renovation projects, decluttering your home can do a lot to improve its general aesthetic (as well as being practical). Get a little creative with your home and make some new storage spaces out of thin air. You could put up hangers and hooks in otherwise-unused pantries or closets to turn them into additional wardrobe space. You could put up new shelving units in rooms. You could even turn the space until the stairs into a storage cupboard. There’s no reason as to why things should be left lying around on the floor or other surfaces in the house. Make your home more spacious.
Improve the garden.
Don’t forget your home’s exterior. Want a little more space in your house? Look outside. Remember the outside? Yes, that overgrown garden which looks more like the Amazon Rainforest is actually a part of your property. You should utilize it. And that doesn’t just mean mowing the lawn every now and then; turn this space into an “outdoor room” that you and your family could actually use. A cozy patio area with a gazebo and comfortable chairs is a good place to start. You could even look into BBQ Burners to turn this space into a fun outdoor dining room for warm summer evenings. Your garden isn’t just a patch of land at the back of your house; it can be so much more if you put some time and effort into it.
Improve the lighting.
As a final piece of advice, brighten up your home a little. I know it’s pretty depressing to have to see your mess of a home in the cold light of day but, once you’ve followed the advice in this article, it should look a lot nicer. You’ll actually want to admire it. You could repaint the walls a neutral color such as white to better reflect daylight and brighten up the house so as to make sure the whole family can admire your handiwork. That means any mess your kids make in the future will be more noticeable; make sure they know that!
